"THE UNIVERSE IS A VAST THEATER, A MAGNIFICENT THEATER, FULL OF MIRACLES ... WE HAVE BEEN CREATED AS AN AUDIENCE TO THE MIRACLES. WE ARE HERE TO SEE, AND TO WORSHIP, AND TO UNDERSTAND."
-RAY BRADBURY (At a Planetary Society conference during the Mars SPIRIT rover landing.)
"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."
-Captain Picard (ST:TNG - "The Drumhead")
Self-realization. I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, when he said, "I drank what?"
-Chris Knight "Real Genius"
"Whosoever kills an innocent human life, it is as the killing of all humanity. Whosoever saves a human life, it is as saving all of humanity."
--Qur'an (Islamic Revelation)
"Chiri mo tsumoreba, yama to naru"
塵も積もれば山となる
Literal Translation: Even dust if stacked up will become a mountain. This Japanese kotowaza is a great way to say that even little things can become great things over time. Or a series of little tasks will equal a lofty goal in time.
A man who becomes conscious of the responsibility he bears toward a human being who affectionately waits for him, or to an unfinished work, will never be able to throw away his life. He knows the "why" for his existence, and will be able to bear almost any "how."
-Victor Frankl
Paul Tournier, Concluding a series on God and the human condition: Those old Greek gods are not just poetry and legend. In them the Ancients personified living realities -- intelligence, beauty, love, or lust, which are still at work in our hearts, and which fashion our persons. The language they speak is that of image and myth, which touches the person much more directly than the explicit language of science and the intellectual dialectic of the modern world. It is also the language of the Bible, of the parables of Christ, which the rationalist of today finds it so difficult to understand, of the Word of God which demands of us not a discussion but a personal decision.
